Check the coolant level in the expansion/overflow tank when the engine is cool. Maintain the level between the "Low" and "Full" marks.
Test Coolant Strength: Use a refractometer (preferred) or hydrometer to check the freeze/boil protection level. A 50/50 mix is standard.
Test Coolant Chemistry: Use Coolant Test Strips (like Cat Coolant Conditioner Test Strips) to check the level of SCA additives and the nitrite level (which protects liners from cavitation). This is a critical, often overlooked step.
