External Cleaning:
Dry Cleaning: Use compressed air from the engine side out (reverse of normal airflow) to blow out loose debris. Be careful not to bend the fins.
Washing: Use a low-pressure water stream and a soft brush. Apply a dedicated radiator cleaner/degreaser, let it soak, and then rinse thoroughly. Never use a high-pressure washer, as it will damage the delicate fins.
Internal Cleaning (Flushing): This addresses scale and rust buildup inside the radiator tubes.
Drain the cooling system.
Refill with a clean water and cooling system flush solution. Run the engine to operating temperature as per the flush chemical's instructions.
Drain the system again completely.
Refill with a mixture of clean water and the recommended concentration of Caterpillar Extended Life Coolant (ELC) and Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA). Using the correct coolant is vital to prevent chemical corrosion and scaling.
