Regular and Correct Lubrication (Greasing)
Frequency: Consult the Caterpillar 345D Operation and Maintenance Manual. However, due to high loads, a common practice is to lubricate every 50 service hours or even daily in severe, abrasive conditions.
Procedure:
Cleanliness is Critical: Thoroughly clean all grease fittings and the area around the seal lips before applying grease.
Rotate While Greasing: Slowly rotate the upper structure during greasing. This ensures the new grease is distributed evenly throughout the entire raceway and helps force out old, contaminated grease.
Grease Until Purge: Apply grease until a clean, slight purge is visible at the seal lips. This confirms the old grease has been displaced.
Correct Grease: Use only the specified high-quality, extreme-pressure (EP) grease, typically a lithium complex-based type recommended by Caterpillar.
