Excessive Play or Looseness:
Cause: The most common cause is improper adjustment or wear of the axial clearance (pre-load). Loose mounting bolts can also cause this issue. Over time, the raceways and balls/rollers wear down, increasing internal clearance.
Rough or Noisy Operation (Grinding, Clicking, or Jerky Movement):
Cause:
Lack of Lubrication: This is the primary cause of premature failure. Without grease, metal-to-metal contact occurs, leading to rapid wear, pitting, and scoring.
Contaminated Grease: Dirt, sand, and debris entering the raceway act as an abrasive, grinding away at the hardened surfaces. Damaged seals are often the entry point.
Raceway Damage: Brinelling (indentations on the raceway from shock loads), spalling (flaking of the surface material), or corrosion.
