Lubrication (Greasing):
This is the most crucial maintenance task.
Grease Type: Always use the grease specified in the Caterpillar 323D operator's manual. Typically, this is a high-quality, extreme-pressure (EP) lithium soap-based grease.
Procedure:
Clean the Fittings: Thoroughly clean the grease fittings (zerks) on the bearing before attaching the grease gun to prevent injecting dirt.
Rotate the Machine: Slowly rotate the upper structure while greasing. This ensures the grease is distributed evenly throughout the entire bearing raceway.
Apply Grease: Pump grease into the fittings until clean, new grease is seen purging from the seal gaps. This indicates that the old, contaminated grease has been forced out.
Wipe Excess: After greasing, wipe away the excess grease that has purged from the seals. Do not remove the hardened grease that forms a protective "cap" on the seal lips, as it helps keep out contaminants.
