Driving the Pin: Use a soft-faced mallet or a hydraulic press to gently drive the pin into place. Never use a steel hammer directly on the pin, as this can damage the precision-machined surface or the threads for retaining bolts.
Sealing and Retention: Once the pin is fully seated, install the new seals and O-rings according to the service manual. Secure the pin with the specified retaining method:
Snap Rings: Ensure they are fully seated in their groove.
Retaining Bolts: Torque them to the specification provided in the Caterpillar service manual. It is often recommended to use a thread-locking compound.
Greasing: Immediately after installation, lubricate the pin using the machine's central greasing system (zerk fittings) until you see fresh grease purging from the seals at all ends. This ensures the cavity is fully filled and contaminants are expelled.
