Lifting (Extension): The operator pulls the control lever. A hydraulic valve directs high-pressure oil from the pump to the cap end (blind side) port of the cylinder. The pressure acts on the large surface area of the piston, creating a massive force that pushes the piston rod out, extending the cylinder and lifting the boom.
Hold Position: When the lever is released to a neutral detent, the hydraulic valve blocks oil flow to and from the cylinder. The cylinder holds its position due to the trapped oil.
