Multi-Stage Design: Unlike a single piston that extends out of a single barrel, a telescoping cylinder consists of a series of nested tubular sections, often called stages or elements. The Caterpillar 773D typically uses a two-stage telescopic cylinder.
Sequential Extension: When hydraulic pressure is applied, the cylinder extends in a specific sequence:
First Stage: The largest-diameter stage (the "barrel" or "main stage") extends first. This provides the highest force for the initial "breakout" effort required to start lifting the heavy, often settled, load.
Second Stage: Once the first stage is fully extended, hydraulic pressure is then directed to extend the next, smaller-diameter stage (the "plunger" or "fly stage"). This stage provides the full reach needed to achieve the high dump angle required for complete and efficient material ejection.
