Bolt Installation and Torquing:
This is the most critical step. Install the new, high-strength mounting bolts provided by Caterpillar. They are often pre-coated with a specific locking compound.
Lubricate the bolt threads and undersides of the bolt heads exactly as specified in the manual. Using incorrect lubricant can drastically alter the clamping force.
Tighten the bolts in a star-pattern sequence (cross-bolting) to ensure even load distribution.
Tighten the bolts in multiple stages to the final torque value specified in the Caterpillar service manual. A final angle torque (e.g., turning the bolt an additional 90 or 120 degrees) is often required to achieve the proper preload/stretch in the bolt. Do not guess the torque values.
