The aftercooler, also known as the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) or Intercooler, is a vital component within the engine's air induction system. It is a heat exchanger specifically designed to cool the air after it has been compressed by the turbocharger.
Primary Function:
Cools Compressed Intake Air: This is its core purpose. The turbocharger compresses air to force more oxygen into the engine cylinders, enabling more fuel to be burned for greater power. However, this compression process significantly heats the air (often to over 200°F / 93°C). Hot air is less dense (contains less oxygen per unit volume) and is more prone to causing detonation (uncontrolled combustion).
The aftercooler cools this hot, compressed air by passing it through a core of fins and tubes while ambient air is forced over them by the fan.
Result: The air becomes denser, cooler, and contains more oxygen molecules.
