Heat Treatment:
This is the most critical step for defining the bushing's mechanical properties.
For Through-Hardened Bushings: The part is heated to a high temperature (austenitizing), quenched rapidly in oil or polymer, and then tempered at a lower temperature. This sequence creates a hard, martensitic microstructure throughout the part. Tempering reduces brittleness and introduces toughness.
For Carburized Bushings: The part is placed in a carbon-rich environment at high heat. Carbon diffuses into the surface, creating a high-carbon "case." It is then quenched and tempered, resulting in a hard case and a tough core.
This 172-2848 bushing is used for 385C excavator.
