The moldboard is not fixed rigidly to the machine; it is mounted on a complex mechanism called the circle and drawbar.
The sideshift cylinder is attached at one end to the grader's main frame and at the other end to this circle/drawbar assembly.
When the operator activates the sideshift control lever in the cab, hydraulic oil is directed to the cylinder.
As the cylinder extends or retracts, it pushes or pulls the entire circle and moldboard assembly sideways.
