The primary function of the stick cylinder is to control the movement of the excavator's stick (or arm). It executes this through two essential actions:
Retracting (Pulling In): This is the cylinder's power stroke. It pulls the stick (and the attached bucket) towards the machine, generating the immense force required for digging, trenching, breaking out material, and dragging objects. This is where the cylinder experiences its highest pressure loads.
Extending (Pushing Out): This action pushes the stick away from the machine. It is used for reaching out to dump material, grading, sloping, and positioning the bucket for the next dig cycle. Control during extension is critical for fine grading work.
